When freedom of expression sucks

So Pakistan's internet providers have blocked Facebook as a protest against this stupid event about drawing caricatures of prophet Muhammad pbuh (I can't be bothered to find the link it made me so angry).

I say good on the Pakistanis.

Anyway, I don't know why these people created that event and also, what's the goddam purpose of such an event. All I can see is the creation and the spread of hatred.

For the uninitiated, drawing any images of the prophet, actually, or any Abrahamic religions prophets are strictly not allowed by Islam as it symbolises idolatry which is forbidden.

So those images and statues of the prophet Jesus are wrong, and calling him the son of God is also wrong - that's idolatry. But that's another story. They will believe what they want to believe and so be it, as long as they don't hurt anyone.

The worst thing is that the event is not only agreed by atheists but Christians as well. If that's their way to show their "constitutional right to freedom of speech & freedom of expression" I feel sad for them. I mean, there's a million other, BETTER things you could speak up on - the Middle East crisis (Israel -Palestine) yes that's not sacred, poverty, teenage pregnancies, animal cruelty, the oil spill, environmental issues, the economy, hell even the death of good music on radio. That is, if you are a responsible citizen of the world.

But no, they had to pick on Muhammad (pbuh). So much hate, so much anger. And then they wonder, why people would want to threaten their lives. The Muslim prophet and of course, Allah is one thing that you don't mess with Muslims about. Even a non-religious (prolly will go to hell) Muslim like me will take up arms if it comes to something as sacred as this.

But mostly we won't do anything and the only protest is via words and boycotts. Pakistan has taken the first step, and Facebook is not reacting for some dumbass reason called "freedom of expression". This is what I don't understand - so messing with a religion with as many followers as Islam is ok, but sending too many messages or adding too many friends at one go on Facebook, or threatening to kill Obama via a poll on Facebook is NOT ok.

What the fuck? If they want to police the site, it should be fair for all isn't it?

Freedom of speech and freedom of expression is a touchy subject matter. And especially when it broaches the topic of religion. There are things you want to just speak up on, but can't. But honestly, some stuff are better left unsaid (and not drawn). What good would you do to the world and the people around you if everything you do is about hate? About creating hate, spreading hate?

If the argument is about how Muslims are terrorists, that Muslims call non-believers infidels, Muslims are oppressive...I even saw a dumb prick saying once Muslims change their ways then they'll pull out their soldiers from Afghanistan and Iraq. That's definitely the dumbest thing I've ever heard. The western world has been imposing their beliefs and their military might on West and Eastern Asia for frickin ages. It's got nothing to do with religion, it's got everything to do with resources and control.

No Muslims are terrorists. The ones who would kill themselves and kill innocents are not Muslim terrorists. They're terrorists who happen to call themselves Muslims. And this fascist word - Islamist. The media uses it to connote Muslim terrorist, yet in journalism they teach you not to use sexist language, for example: Feminists tear their bras in anger when people say mankind instead of humankind. Which is a valid point, because there is another gender in this planet too.

But using such a word to represent terrorism. This is why the hate is never ending. This is why there is suspicion and thanks to the terrorists masquerading as Muslims, the rest of Muslims and the religion gets the flak too. So it's the journalists right to express it as such, but can't they use just plain old terrorists? Makes them sound unlearned innit?

And what's this about Muslims have to kill infidels? That's dumb. What the hell for? Where did they find such gems...some broken hadiths they twisted to serve their purpose of hate and discrimination?

As for the supposed oppression of Muslims by its laws, it has NOTHING to do with the religion and everything to do with the country and the powers that control it. Now I'm thinking, those who are criticising said laws are not even "oppressed" by those supposed laws. So they go to Saudi and have to cover up? So what, never heard of when in Rome, do as the Romans do? Even I had to cover up my legs when I went to the Hindu temple in Bali..what's the big deal.

What is being oppressive is forcing your belief on others - secular or religious. For example, look at France - so little Muslim girls can't wear headscarves to school. Isn't that oppression? The discrimination of religion? Headscarves are just that, something to cover up the head and hair, like a hat. Like here, if they won't allow Sikh boys to wear the turban in school, that's discrimination, that's oppression. Anyway, I never looked at France as the so called liberal minded society ever again after hearing that...plus they're supposed to be pretty racist, though Americans are worse hands down.

Anyway, I'm just saying...I could talk until my face is blue about this, and all it takes to express and speak freely is just a little respect from everyone. Respect for other beliefs, other faiths, other non-faiths, others feelings.

That's all. If you still want to go on and on about it though, you could start a blog.

Haha.
