Islands Part 1

I do love beaches, the sun, the sea and sand on my toes, yes I do. Nothing makes my soul happier than to see the wide stretch of the sea, to feel its breeze on my skin, and to feel the sun burning it at the same time. And the sound of the waves is quite possibly the most soothing lullaby ever.

The ocean makes me happy, and at the same time, scared. It is these feelings that have enchanted me, this sharp contradiction, and this is why I can never tire of it.

And whenever I go on holidays, the selfish person in me would always want to go to islands, or somewhere with a beach. To me, the perfect holiday is an island / beach holiday.

I'm not so much into traveling for culture or shopping, though I don't mind it at all. I would enjoy it if I actually went I'm sure.

Anyway, I didn't go on any holidays in 2011 mainly due to some changes at work; I couldn't snag not even a weekend away. We moved offices and I was the lone ranger at my post. I was quite frazzled most of the time and supremely stressed out. I wanted to go away for a break, but it didn't happen.

But this year I went for two island holidays within a month of each other. The first trip was for his birthday in June.

Redang

He turned 35 this year, and decided we should celebrate by going to Redang for a quick weekend getaway. We made the booking quickly and after not applying for annual leave for a million years the bosses relented and let me have one day of leave (Friday).

I had a shoot on the Thursday that we were to leave for Kuala Terengganu, but dear sweet old boss actually let me leave early, even wishing me to have fun (shock, surprise, wow!). We rushed off from his old place in Kota Damansara to Subang airport, and flew via Firefly to Kuala Terengganu. That was my first ride in a Firefly and I survived to tell this story (I'm sorry, but those propellers scare me!).

We arrived and went to this small but clean budget hotel in town for a night of rest. We kept making jokes that if we're caught here by the moral police we'd have to get married and stuff. That small hotel was actually very clean, and there weren't any funny, questionable stains on the bedsheets or wall or moaning / screaming / strangling from the other rooms. I was glad that we didn't accidentally check into a love motel.

The next morning we went to the jetty for our ferry trip to the island. It took a couple of hours and finally we arrived. Our hotel pick up was waiting and drove us to The Taaras. I have to say, that place is beautiful, the beach is perfect and the environment serene.

We got a suite with a living room and 2 bathrooms (one of it with a tub) and everything. It was lovely. It wasn't sound-proof though, but that's another story. That you will never hear.

Anyway. We spent the first day lounging around at the beach of that resort, reading and surfing the net, and taking pictures. Mostly it was him who took pictures. It irritated me after a while I had to tell him to stop. I have to say though, he took some really nice pictures of me. I have to say I hardly look good in pictures, but when he took it I kinda like some of the shots.

We had his birthday dinner at the restaurant in the same resort. The food was nothing to shout about but the view was awesome. Nothing beats hearing the sound of the waves while dining under the stars innit?

The next day we went on a snorkeling trip around Redang. We hired a boat just for us two, and it was a lot of fun. I refused to wear the floating jacket while snorkeling of course, it's much easier to swim, and faster too, without it. At one point towards the end of the trip the boat broke down. We had to be towed away by another boat. I was getting worried that we would be stranded because we didn't see any other boats for a short while. I kept thinking, who should I kill and eat first if we really are stranded in the middle of the sea?

That evening at the resort we hung out at the beach, and he wrote on the sand: Would you marry me?
I instinctively answered Yes. Granted, we have not been together for very long, but I feel that we have known each other for ages; it's just so...comfortable. I don't think I can find anyone like him, ever.

So I felt that his question deserved a positive answer. And yes, I do want to grow old with this guy.

The next day we left for home. It was a lovely trip, and I have to admit, sometimes you don't need to travel far to experience a really wonderful holiday. My country definitely has some of the best beaches and oceans. And that, in my book, is a perfect holiday.
