Of music and mud - ONE

Last weekend we went to Urbanscapes 2012, a music and art outdoors fest held annually in town. The last Urbanscapes I went to was a couple of years back, held at KLPAC. Recently the organisers held the event at Padang Astaka in Petaling Jaya.

I bought the tickets while they were still on pre-sale, and thank God I did because it was much more expensive closer to the event! I felt glad that the quarter happily wanted to come with.

It was a 2 days fest, and I got the weekend tickets because I wanted to see everything. And I'm happy that we went on both days.

I had to take off early from work that Saturday (working weekends suck!), and we rushed to the venue to catch my friend Michelle performing under her stage / band name Froya. I love her music. But we got distracted and confused by the venue when we arrived, and missed her performance. Good thing I've seen her perform a couple of times before - she is absolutely awesome.

By the time we got there, we saw Pastel Lite performing. Wasn't too keen on them though, the music was brilliant but the vocals aren't that great. And the vocalist kept saying: "That was awkward" after she performed, in an American accent (not sure if it was real or affected? but it was annoying all the same), so we decided to get the fuck outta there.

The field was muddy as promised and we both wore our Converse sneakers. After walking about, we decided to hang out at the non-halal section (non-halal because they sold beers in that area), and watch Bittersweet perform on top of the Puma bus from the shaded tables. Bumped into a few of my friends whom I haven't seen in a while, and we then proceeded to move to the dance music section, to..what else? Move! :)

We partied to DJ Goldierocks and then wandered around while waiting for a couple of shows. We caught an acoustic show as part of the Wknd acoustic set, and rushed off to watch Charlie Lim. He has a brilliant, beautiful voice. Though I thought he sounded much much better when I first saw him live at The Bee some months ago.

After Charlie Lim, we wandered around the food shops while waiting for my friend Abby's troupe of poets to perform on the Green Stage. Got ourselves some delicious snacks and we parked ourselves in front of the stage. Suddenly we saw Loque, the quarter's friend from his MCKK days. He was about to perform as part of the Wknd acoustic set on that same stage. So we stayed and watched.

I like Monoloque the band. Wished it was a full band playing on the Volkswagen Stage. That would have been terrific.

Soon after, Seronok - the spoken word and poetry performance came on. My friend Abby was one fourth of the collective. I never thought I would enjoy watching and listening to spoken words at a music fest! The girls were amazing. Their words shocking, honest, provocative and sweet. Gave me goosebumps!

Soon after their show, we ran off to watch Love Me Butch at the main stage (Volkswagen stage). Awesome rockin stuff. I missed Tenderfist though, I think it happened at around the same time.

We were tired, so decided to have a seat and rest our feet while waiting for the headliner's show. About 10 minutes later, Yuna came on. She is a superstar. Last year I went to watch her perform and I can say that she has improved tremendously. From her singing, to her stage presence, to her performance to her interaction with the audience. She is so much more confident now.

And her songs are so beautiful. She sang an extended version to one of my favourites of hers - Decorate. Lovely stuff.

However, we were both so tired. And decided to leave just as Yuna started to sing my most favourite song of hers called Penakut. But because of the fatigue we felt, I did not even complain. As we walked slowly, the song played like a soundtrack to our muddied footsteps and ended just as we reached the exit. Perfect day.
