Thank you for smoking?

I really gotta quit smoking. Well it's not the first time I've thought of that obviously but after last night's near death situation while doing the simple camel pose (I couldn't breathe whenever I needed to bend backwards), and being out of breath after climbing a flight of stairs to work like someone totally unfit, I'm thinking - time to really say bye bye to one of my favourite things.

Yes, I actually really do like smoking. I like the taste of cigarettes, although the smell and having tiny ashes scattered all over my car are off putting.

I first tried smoking when I was 14. Peer pressure obviously. I was friendly with 17 year olds who smoked, so I wanted to try too. At that time I even went to buy my own ciggies; looking back I'm amazed they never asked for IDs. But being young and stupid, I smoked at home as well, thinking the cigarette smell couldn't be detected outside my room, just because I couldn't smell them.

How would I know that mum could smell them when she came knocking at the door! She asked me: Is there a guy in your room? I was like: No. And then she said: Is that cigarettes I smell? I was like: No. She said: Don't lie; and pushed the door opened and went into my room. To cut the long story short, she used reverse psychology and got me another pack of ciggies and made me smoked them in front of her one after another non stop. I felt nauseous and guilt striken at the end of it and vowed to never smoke again.

And what did they say about "never say never"? 5 years later I was puffing away again, this time I was already in college so I wasn't home much and mum did say after age 18 I can do whatever I want. Hehe.

I haven't stopped smoking since then. I've now smoked consistently, ranging from a pack to two packs a day, moved from Dunhill to Marlboro because the Dunhill ciggies sold in Indonesia tastes like crap and after returning to Malaysia my system couldn't take the heavy taste of Malaysian Dunhill ciggies anymore. I've seen the price of a pack of cigarettes go up and up. I've tasted the cigarettes in a few different countries and flaunted and followed their smoking laws.

Then recently my husband decided to stop smoking, he's been steadily and eerily coughing his lungs out for days. Quite worrying. Apparently that is how it goes when you first quit, you cough like it's going out of fashion, or so he's been told. I hope the coughing stops soon.

The fasting month will be here next week. I'm thinking, that may be a good time to quit smoking, gradually.
