Boobquake

Recently an Iranian cleric gave a speech during Friday prayers that women who are dressed "provocatively" are to blame for promiscuity in Iran and in turn, it causes earthquakes.

As a Muslim, I respect and understand why women have to dress modestly, but the religion is not one sided. It applies to men as well. Even better, men are supposed to lower their gaze when they come across women as a sign of respect (this is my interpretation, and they need to lower their gaze whether the women are dressed provocatively or not).

Anyway, to counter that claim and to prove the cleric wrong, one woman by the name of Jen McCreight came up with an event called Boobquake and the plan was to have women from all shapes and sizes from all over the world reveal a bit of cleavage / wear the shortest shorts / skirts on Monday April 26th 2010. And from the sheer power of this mass display of cleavage and skin we will find out whether earthquakes really are caused by women dressed as such or whether Iran really has a shitty faultline.

OK, I'm certainly no expert in discussing Islam, despite being born Muslim and I don't mean any disrespect to to the religion when I say I support this protest 100%. It's fun, it's hilarious and it's not a lot of work.

And if you do bother to read McCreight's own blog you'll understand that even though at first she meant it as a silly boob joke and it has gotten out of hand, it wasn't meant to be offensive to women and it's not about dressing like skanks. It's true, modesty in terms of dressing is up to the individual. For me, a little bit of cleavage as long as you're not wearing a low cut top with everything hanging out is not indecent. And it also depends where you are. I mean, you can't be going a mosque, church, temple dressed like a stripper. It's all common sense and respect for others.

It's a shame that such a stupid, misogynistic and ignorant claim can be made by a religious man. Blaming women for something that is beyond the control of human beings, that is, earthquakes is just as bad as saying little children deserves to get raped because they're so damned cute. What the fuck?

I believe that every human being is responsible for their own body and they could do whatever they want with it, dress it up however - cover it up top to toe or wear the skimpiest little dresses as long as they don't hurt anyone. Also, how people like to dress is their own choice and not for others to judge and for fucks sake you men, learn to have a little self control already!
